Cold December Nights: A Christmas Playlist

Image

It’s no secret that I am crazy obsessed with Christmas. I love everything about it.
Snow, eggnog, christmas cookies, & spending time with friends & family.
But one of my favorite, favorite things about Christmas is…
the music!
Nothing says it’s Christmas time quite like hearing Christmas music wherever you go.

Every year I am in charge of the Christmas music and make a huge playlist. I like to have a wide variety of Christmas songs and include a little something for everyone – some good ole classics (Elvis & Frank Sinatra), a lil country (Nobody does a Country Christmas quite like Dolly Parton!), a lil pop (Britney, Mariah), indie, etc.
I like to add new Christmas songs each year and keep it updated because let’s be real, nobody wants to hear the same old christmas songs played over and over again, year after year.

Here’s a list of 20 of our current favorite Christmas songs for this holiday season..
(You can find all these songs on youtube or itunes.)

Happy Christmas Caroling!

1. Merry Christmas, Baby. by Cee Lo Green ft. Rod Stewart

Gotta Hear This: Lover, You Should’ve Come Over by Jeff Buckley

Image

No explanation needed. Jeff Buckley is one of the greats.

‘It’s never over, my kingdom for a kiss upon her shoulder
It’s never over, all my riches for her smiles when i slept so soft against her
It’s never over, all my blood for the sweetness of her laughter
It’s never over, she’s the tear that hangs inside my soul forever’

My other favorite songs from their Debut album ‘Dark Eyes’ are Need It & Call Me In The Afternoon.

 2. Real Love by The Boom Booms

Real Love is available for FREE download here!

I love everything about The Boom Booms – their name, chill tunes & positive vibes.

I got the chance to see them live this past Summer and have been hooked ever since. Their live show is incredible. So uplifting – its like one big, soulful dance party. They are constantly touring, so if you get a chance to see them live, DO IT! You won’t be disappointed.

3. If I Didn’t Know Better by Sam Palladio & Clare Bowen (from the television show Nashville)

image

John Paul White of The Civil Wars wrote this song with singer-songwriter Arum Rae. White and his Civil Wars bandmate, Joy Williams originally recorded the song for their ‘Live at Eddie’s Attic’ 2009 album.

I love Sam & Clare’s version on the show.

Sam Palladio who plays Gunnar on Nashville is in an indie folk band called Salt Water Thief.

4. Crying In The Night by Buckingham Nicks

image

Buckingham Nicks is a 10-track LP that Stevie Nicks & Lindsey Buckingham recorded before joining Fleetwood Mac. Although the album was considered a commercial flop and was never officially released, there are quite a few gems on the CD. Crying In The Night is my favorite.

5. Crooked Smile by J. Cole feat. TLC

From my headphones to yours, Enjoy. 🙂

Song: Fresh Pair of Eyes
Artist: Brooke Waggoner

This songs been on repeat since I first heard it a few days ago on the tv show Pretty Little Liars. Yes, I watch Pretty Little Liars – its actually a pretty good show! I wasn’t interested in it at all when it first aired on tv a few years ago and never watched it, but I’ve been desperate since my laptop broke down a few days ago & since I can no longer watch any shows on the laptop, I’ve resorted to Netflix & randomly ended up choosing PLL. I’m actually pleasantly surprised at how good it is! (plus the show plays some really good songs) Just finished season one & I’m hooked. (must find out who A is!)

Okay, got totally sidetracked there – lets get back to the music…

Brooke Waggoner is an incredible indie folk/pop artist based in Nashville, Tennessee.
She has released 4 albums, and her latest (titled Originator) was released on March 5, 2013. Brooke released all her 4 albums independently, and all the music was fully orchestrated, written and arranged by her.

Over the past few years, Brooke won the ‘NBN Emerging Artist Award’ at the Nashville Music Awards, and was also nominated for a prestigious Independent Music Award, her songs have been played on many tv shows such as Pretty Little Liars & Grey’s Anatomy, she’s released a Live Concert DVD, produced/collaborated with many different artists, & has even performed/recorded with Jack White on his album, Blunderbuss.

Quote from Brooke about the recording process on her latest record:
(Quote from Brooke’s Facebook Page)

After numerous cups of coffee, late nights spent exchanging notes and emails, and geeking out over TalkTalk records we decided recording this LP in an old-fashioned and traditional manner only made sense. Vintage gear and 2″ tape. No computers — Just a room with really good musicians and ears for beautiful things.”

If you’re looking for real, genuine talent & captivating, beautiful songs – check out Brooke Waggoner.

So I know I’ve been seriously lacking with the music portion of the blog, (I have been so sidetracked by my baking obsession lately!) but I found some much-needed motivation after coming across an artist named Max Frost.

I first came across his song ‘White Lies’ a few months ago on the ‘May 2013 Playlist’ from the Indie Rock Playlist. If you haven’t heard of the Indie Rock Playlist – they release epic playlists monthly that consist of really cool indie rock/pop/electronic songs by up-and-coming artists, and also some more mainstream bands. If you are a fan of indie music, definitely check it out. I’ve found out about a lot of good songs and bands from there.

White Lies was the song that really stood out for me and I’ve probably listened to it a good hundred times since then. The song is so catchy, its got a killer melody but the lyrics are what gets me. Sooo good.
I just thought to look up the artist the other day to try to find out more info and I’m glad I did! There’s not too much info online about him yet but I’m sure that’s going to change very soon… Max Frost is definitely an artist to watch. So much talent.

I’m not sure how I would classify his music – mix of soul, hip hop, feel-good, alt, blues, funk, fresh, rock. Normally the greatest artists have a wide range of influences which translates into their music and I believe Max is one of them.
If you were to take the greatest bits and pieces from each genre of music and blend it all together to create this unique new sound – that’s how I would describe his music.
Catchy, unique, feel-good tunes.

So from what I could gather, I found out that he’s a Singer/Songwriter/Producer & Multi-Instrumentalist (Max played all the instruments on every track he’s recorded so far) from Austin, TX.
He’s only 21 years old (crazy!), and has been playing gigs for almost a decade already.
He just signed to Atlantic Records and is releasing an EP later this year so look out for that! I’m so excited to hear the EP – I’m sure he’s going to be topping the charts soon and doing big things.

Follow Max on Twitter at http://www.twitter.com/maxfrostmusic or visit his site http://www.maxfrost.net for the latest news.

Check out another great track by Max titled My Walk :

(this has been my jam the past few days – i listened to it while running today, and literally couldn’t stop smiling at everyone i passed haha. instant mood-booster)

Song: Millions
Artist: Hannah Georgas

Vancouver, BC has such a strong music scene right now and I believe Hannah Georgas is a main component as to why. Her synth-pop, singer/songwriter style and witty lyrics are a breath of fresh air.

Originally from Newmarket, Ontario, Hannah moved to Victoria to attend university, and later on located to Vancouver.
She won the “Emerging Artist of the Year” award at XM’s Verge Music Awards in 2011 and “Solo Artist of the Year” at the Sirius/XM-sponsored Indies. Her first album, ‘This Is Good’ was put up for the Polaris Music Prize. And at the 2011 Juno Awards, Georgas was nominated for both “Best New Artist of the Year” and “Songwriter of the Year.”

She has toured with fellow Canadian Kathleen Edwards as her opening act, plus was apart of Kathleen’s backing ensemble.

Her second self-titled album was released on October 2, 2012. Check out one of my favorite tracks from the album, titled ‘Millions’. Ryan Guldemond from the band MOTHER MOTHER also makes an appearance!

‘I wanna make a million bucks. I wanna make my millions.
My fear is a crutch, a little hell that I live in.
If she can do it what the fuck, how come I can’t?
I wanna make a million bucks. I wanna make my millions.’
